Tour Martini
THE DEATH OF A TOWER

"“Brussels is a paradox: a plastic, visual, aesthetic by default, multi-cultural and multi-architectural chaos, a rich and unique urban collage, dirty and ugly, beautiful and anarchic, born of a some real estate activism in collaboration with politicians... Do we need an urban policy, going further than the current fussy and backward-looking urban planning regulations, to cultivate the paradoxical charm of a badly licked city and eliminate its excesses?
NEW 09/21 The video Martini Ground Zero is online here, links are updated (thanks to Internet Archive and its Wayback Machine) !

From September 17, 20O1 to June 13, 2002, a video camera filmed image by image the slow death of the Martini Tower (Center International Rogier), symbol of the daring urban and architectural modernity of the 1950s and 1960s in the heart of Brussels. At least, we will thus preserve the trace of its disappearance, trace of which the final form, at the end of the 10 months of the destruction process, is a time-lapse video showing in 5 minutes the destruction of the tower: Martini Ground Zero.

The destruction process ended on May 23, 2002 and the camera is unplugged.
For a long time, the Martini Tower seemed to be built on the rocks. But at a time when the ice floes are melting, the ice cubes have the flu and Martini has become the martyr tower of the urban policy of François Xavier De Donnéa, ex-mayor (burgmaster) of Brussels, who, long before Bin Laden, dreamed to cut the towers of Brussels. The Martini Tower is a perfect example of abruxellation: by dint of being there, its ugliness (*) ended up pleasing, and hatred turned into love-mourning."
