Impersonate
8 June - 1 September 2017
An installation by IVRO (Romain Marula & Ivan Murit)
Impersonate is an installation that addresses the social interactions of social media and their algorithmic nature. Its absurdity highlights the possible uses, abuses and benefits of fully automated interactions.
Impersonate shows an exchange between two chatbots – artificial intelligences able to simulate how a human would behave as a conversational partner. Instead of answering in text, both bots reply using short video extracts found after a text search in YouTube subtitles.
The artificial intelligence is embodied by the characters shown in the video. They become the chatbot's puppets, hence the title "Impersonate".
