Evolutionary Drawing Workshop with Peter Todd and William Latham

Coinciding with the Mutator 1 + 2 exhibition at iMAL, Latham will contextualise his evolutionary drawings within the history of art and explain the basic rules of FormSynth, a rule-based system for the modification of forms. The group will then use these rules to create large-scale collaborative hand drawings, incorporating the element of chance by introducing a throw of the dice. Attendees will learn how to design new rules to add to the FormSynth rule set.

Suitable for all abilities, materials included (no computers required).

Evolutionary Live Coding Workshop with Peter Todd and William Latham

Stephen Todd was a collaborator with William Latham in his pioneering computer artwork of the late 80s and 90s. His son, Peter Todd was creative coder for whom these concepts shaped his formative years. Together they present a computer art workshop for the curious layman. Participants will learn how a few lines of code can open up a mesmerising and chaotic world of generative virtual sculpture and imagery. Learn how the machine can act as a kind of creative partner in this process, using evolutionary algorithms to explore the aesthetic landscape of the potential variations inherent in that code. The workshop will include short talks and discussion but will focus on hands-on experimentation using the latest web technologies (html5, webGL).

Attendees should bring their own laptops with Google Chrome browser.

Suitable for those with some basic knowledge of programming.
