CONTinENT
8 september - 12 oktober 2000
CONTinENT-exhibition presents new multimedia and internet works from Brussels, Helsinki and Paris. The works were produced in 1999-2000 through a one year process, named Interactive Media Art Workshop (IMAW), a European master class for young up-and-coming as well as more established media artists.
The primary aim of the project has been to provide a production environment for creative and artistic projects within interactive media. Due to the support and market structures of the field, too many creative ideas remain unrealized. We felt that a collaborative workshop and exhibition would especially promote the younger artists. This project was supported by Brussels and Helsinki, the European Capitales of Culture for 2000.
A longer-term aim of the project was to work towards establishing permanent structures for media cultural production in Belgium and Finland. During the workshop process, important steps towards this goal have also been taken.
CONTinENT is the first European project of the new non-profit structure established in Brussels, the iMAL association (interactive Media Art Laboratory), while m-Cult, the Finnish Centre for Media Culture association was founded in March 2000.
Through this co-production we wish to stress the need to create permanent production structures for media art and culture, in collaboration with European and international networks.
