From the CD-ROM Revolution to the Future of Electronic Publishing

Lezing door Bob Stein (Voyager) en debat

In het kader van de tentoonstelling 'Welcome to the Future!' organiseert iMAL, samen met PACKED, PILEn en PointCulture, een unieke lezing door Bob Stein, één van de belangrijkste actoren in het veld van de digitale publicatie en tevens oprichter van The Voyager Company en van Institute for the Future of the Book.

De lezing wordt gevolgd door een rondetafelgesprek met Etienne Mineur (éditions volumiques), Pierre Lavoie (voorheen Hyptique) en Yves Bernard (voorheen Magic Media, iMAL), met moderatie door Emanuel Lorrain (Packed) en Morgane Batoz-Herges (PILen ).

Over de sprekers

Bob Stein is founder and co-director of the Institute for the Future of the Book and founder of The Voyager Company. The last 13 years he produced more than 300 titles under 'The Criterion Collection', a series of films on videodisc, and more than 75 CD ROM titles including the CD Companion to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, 'Who Built America', and the Voyager edition of 'Macbeth'. Previous to Voyager, Stein worked with Alan Kay in the Research Group at Atari on a variety of electronic publishing projects. Eleven years ago Stein started 'Night Kitchen' to develop authoring tools for the next generation of electronic publishing. That work is now being continued at the Institute for the Future of the Book.

Etienne Mineur has produced more than a dozen cultural CD-ROM's a.o. 'About Freud' (Milia d'Or 1999) and a collection about authors (Marcel Proust ...), published by the Bibliothéque de La Pléiade (BNF). He designed and developed the website www.isseymiyake.com for the Japanese company Issey Miyake, for which he received numerous international awards. He is the co-founder of Incandescence, a publishing house specialized in themes related to new technologies and experimental art. He is also co-founder of les éditions volumiques, a publishing house specialised in new games and toys focusing on the relationship between the tangible and the digital. Etienne is also professor at ENSAD of Paris, ENSCI and H.E.A.D in Geneva.

Pierre Lavoie was CEO en creatief directeur van Hyptique, één van de weinige multimedia studio's, die tussen 1994 en 2005 bepalend waren voor interactieve cultuur in Frankrijk. Bij Hyptique zijn een groot aantal cd-roms verschenen, voornamelijk op het vlak van muziek. Pierre Lavoie richtte in 2000 Numer op, een organisatie die de term interactief design introduceerde in Frankrijk en die verschillende meetings opzette, waar internationale designers elkaar konden ontmoeten. Hij verkocht Hyptique in 2011 en adviseert momenteel belangrijke culturele spelers over digitale materies.

Yves Bernard was gedurende 10 jaar wetenschappelijk onderzoeker in het veld van de architectuur en de informatica. In 1994 richtte hij het bedrijf Magic Media op in Brussel, één van de eerste nieuwe media studio's in Europa, met een focus op kunst & cultuur projecten. Hij was projectleider, interaction designer en software engineer van enkele gelauwerde cd-roms, gerealiseerd door toonaangevende uitgevers (bv. 'Art du Moyen-Age', een cd-rom uitgegeven door Gallimard, ontving de MILIA d'Or Award 1998 voor de beste kunst & cultuur cd-rom). Hij was als projectleider betrokken bij diverse Europese internetprojecten. In 1999 richtte hij mee de non-profit organisatie iMAL (Interactive Media Art Laboratory) op, waar hij  artistiek directeur is. Hij produceerde meerdere mediakunst projecten en was de curator van vele tentoonstellingen en/of festivals in Brussel, Finland en Nederland. Yves is de auteur of co-auteur van digitale kunstwerken, waarin de grenzen tussen de fysieke wereld en het internet worden verkend (Martini Ground Zero, OFFFCAM, The Gate). Ze worden regelmatig tentoongesteld (o.a. Cinematheque, San Francisco / 2002; Shanghai Biennale / 2010). Hij doceert digitale kunsten aan ERG, Saint-Luc in Brussel en Arts au Carré, Mons.
